“I was born of a generation that is able to do away with the harsh musical segregation that exists today. Growing up we’d hear all kinds on music broadcast on the radio. For me, eclecticism and hybridisation is key. I have no loyalty to an era, or to one musical culture over another. I’m still rooted in the same soil.
My goal throughout the recording of "The Outer Marker" was to produce sounds from which one frequently couldn't determine the source. There’s an exciting alchemic sense of adventure in the process. A need to transform the most mundane everyday sounds and give them magical properties. I'm trying to produce music that is equally about time as much as it is about place. Working on pieces that are largely beatless, I'm fully aware that I'm going to alienate a certain number of listeners. The long form structures in many of these tracks allows for a slow burn which builds a nonlinear narrative. My hope is that a kinship is built through the exploration of a shared nostalgic connection between listener and my work. These elements are forged from the influence of nature, film, and musique concrete. By definition, abstract music grants a fair amount of room for improvisation, free from a computerized grid. As a byproduct of this process, I could peel away the emotional layers of my own past and speak to a shared history.
The journey is more about discovery as opposed to questioning. Ultimately, the key is to create a vivid environment for the listener that evokes a sense of familiarity within the mind of the listener.”
